Nolan Hauta was born and raised in Cook, Minnesota. In Cook he was involved in the activities, arts and athletics including Band, Jazz Band, Knowledge Bowl, Math League, Student Council, Cross Country and Track & Field to name a few. He attended the University of Minnesota-Morris (UMM) where he graduated with High Distinction as a Music Major. There he also earned a K-12 teaching license in Instrumental and Classroom Music and a K-12 teaching license in Vocal and Classroom Music. While at UMM, Mr. Hauta was involved in all four Jazz Ensembles, the Symphonic Winds, Orchestra, Concert Choir, Opera Workshop, Brass Quartet, Trombone Quartet, Percussion Ensemble plus numerous jazz combos and small vocal or instrumental ensembles. He was also fortunate enough to direct the Cougar 1 Jazz Ensemble for a year, guest conduct the Symphonic Winds, serve on the Symphonic Winds council for three years (one as President) and serve on the UMM-MENC board for three years (two as President). At UMM, Mr. Hauta earned many scholarships for musical and academic excellence and was named Scholar of the College.
He brings to Ely several years of teaching experience; all of which include over 200 students in his classroom. Mr. Hauta has taught beginners, seniors, everyone in between, students with special needs, marching, jazz band, drum line, solos and ensembles. He has enjoyed leading students in high-energy pep band performances; including 36 events in his second year teaching (this includes traveling to two state hockey tournaments). He enjoys bringing special guests to the classroom; music educators, professional musicians, guest speakers or ensembles on tour (collegiate or professional concert series performers). Mr. Hauta received several peer-nominated awards for going "above and beyond" as a teacher. He has provided Band Camp opportunites to beginning band students to get a solid understanding of their instrument before the school year even begins. He has also worked with the following music technologies to enhance student learning; SmartBoard, SmartMusic, Finale and extensive use of classroom websites. He has written for "Teaching Music Magazine" and provides mentorship opportunities to less-esperienced teachers; especially in the field of music education. He has brought students to MBDA Honor Bands, collegiate honor bands and UND Pride of the North Band Day. He has planned and organized trips near and far. He continues his education through workshops and clinics such as the MMEA Midwinter Clinic, MBDA Instrumental Teaching Symposium, SMSU's MN Area Conducting Workshop, Concordia College's Wind Band Institute and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. He is currently involved with MMEA, MENC, NE-MBDA, Mesabi Community Orchestra, Northern Lakes Arts Association, The Directors, the Little Big Band, Pit Orchestra for the Ely Community Musical, Virginia Summer Band and the Largemouth Brass.
